Getting hungry and soliciting nicknames

First of all, terrific news came the other day in the form of an e-mail from the owner of the new Five Guys in Olathe. It's 10 minutes, tops, from Ball Star World Headquarters and it opens on Monday. The bad news is I'm already hungry.

Also been getting a lot of e-mails trying to put nicknames on various Royals. Here's a small sampling:

Bash Gordon.

Rake Butler.

Three Amigos (for Joakim Soria, Leo Nunez and Ramon Ramirez).

There's also this thread at Royals Corner with some pretty good (and pretty terrible) suggestions.

I kind of like Joakim the Dream.

Good AfterNunez makes me giggle for some reason, but it sounds too much like something Chris Berman would come up with, which I'm pretty sure means it sucks.

Can't help but love the Dirty Nunez, though I'd need a judge's ruling on whether it's PG.

Any other suggestions?

I'm riding high on the intelligence of Ball Star readers after two people wrote in with the scratched starter thing yesterday. Don't let me down.

Couple people on here, I think, had been asking about the "El CD" on Leo Nunez's glove. Asked him about it the other day, it's a nickname he grew up with in the Dominican. I asked what it stood for, if anything, he said, "It's a long story."

It really isn't even border-line appropriate, but I have always been a fan of Ross "Blow Your" Gload.

Here's a few I like :

"Run, Joey, Run" Gathright ( obscure 70's Saturday morning TV reference )

"Smash" Gordon

Billy "Batler"

Brian "Brainister"

Leo "The Dirty Nunez"

"Pro-Zack" Greinke

( quotation marks optional )

How about:

"Makin me Soria met ya"?

-OR-

"Sit yer Soria stown?"

(You need to say these out loud)

I am only a fan of the Chiefs and Royals because I live here.

This is going to be fun. 1) John "The inning stops here" Buck I still don't know how this guy continues to cash MLB paychecks. 2) Gil "Well if I'm not going to get any run support I might as well give up 5 runs" Meche. 3)Alex "Golden strikeout boy) Gordon. 4) Trey "I didn't know these guys were this bad' Hillman. 5)Tony "I wanna hit like Angel Berroa" Pena Jr. 6)David "Wow I am hurt even earlier than Mike Sweeney" DeJesus. 7)Mark "Am I the only guy on this team that can play" Grudzielanek. 8)Billy "Are me and Mark Grud the only 2 guys on this team that can play" Butler. 9)Zack "I think it's time for my breakdown" Greinke.

Why the hate man?? I hope that the Royals can stand up this year and maybe change your view on them...I know they've been pretty terrible in years past but once you get to the bottom you have no where to go but up...

Billy "Groundskeeper Willie" Butler - After all, all he does is rake.

Zack "Silent K" Grienke - Quiet kid, technically the 'K' in his first name could be deemed silent, and he's known to strike a few batters out.

Tony "Pam" Pena, Jr. - Insert your preferred "no stick" comment here.

Butler should be know as Babe. Think about it. He's just 21, he's a little on the portly side and he can flat out rake. Billy Butler = BaBe. It works on so many levels. If only he used to be a pitcher and hit for more power....

Submitted by Sam Mellinger on April 11, 2008 - 4:01pm.

....that Billy would've been drafted as a pitcher if he wasn't such a good hitting prospect. One scout still says Billy had one of the best sliders he'd ever seen from a high school kid, and Ryan Shealy says Billy has the best knuckleball on the team, for whatever that's worth.

The G-man angle could work too!! Maybe we could work that in with DA BLUES BROTHERS theme. Dress like a G-man or a Blues Brother, Jake or Ellwood. Always thought Cab Calloway was WAY cool lookin in dat flick. I think the Royals could get the band back together to save the orphanage again. Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Donald "Duck" Dunn and "Bones" Malone are still very active in the music scene I'm pretty sure.

Maybe save the Peter Gunn theme for the seventh inning and other Blues Bros. tunes the rest of the game. Except a one run ball game in the ninth has gotta be the THEME. Could even pick some deflating tunes for the oppostion when they come to bat,,,, like "I'm a looooooser"

Now that the Royals have settled down and started playing the way we knew they would. Trey Hillman will experience many first's with the Royals this year. The next 1st for him is his 1st 19 game losing streak. Yep it looks like the Royals will be buried again by the end of April. They simply cannot score runs.

Like Brando and STELLA!!!

Submitted by asta dog on April 11, 2008 - 2:32pm.

Almost forgot,,,, Since it's Billy Ray Butler, how about BUBBA Butler. Looks the part, he's from the south and would carry throught the ballpark when properly presented from the diaphragm with Mucho Gusto.

Submitted by asta dog on April 11, 2008 - 2:26pm.

I have been campaigning for this since January, sooo,,,, here goes.

Joey Gathright should be called ICHI G for obvious reasons. Swat hitter, gotta watch the bunt, torments the pitchers and defense, gives other hitters good counts and pitchs to look at, turns a single into a triple. Well you get the idea.

Now this could be big with the new powder blue jerseys. DA BLUES BROTHERS!! Have a shades day at the K. Like every Friday night to start a tradition. Would go great with the fireworks!

Start each inning when the Royals come to bat with the Blues Brothers version of the Peter Gunn TV theme song. Now that would get the crowd rockin. Excerpt: "Got a full tank of gas, a full pack of cigarettes and we're wearing sunglasses at night,,,, let's roll!!" And another: "We're on a mission from GOD!!"

"Goat", no reason. My wife came up with it last year, and that is what we call him now. No disrespect intended.

Billy Butler = Billy the kid.. on another note, am I the only person that hates hearing Tony Pena referred to as TJ?

Submitted by JYarnell on April 12, 2008 - 7:26am.

For some reason, I'm not a big fan of him being called TJ either.

Gathright's nickname should be "Roo" as in the baby kangaroo from Pooh Corner.

The lineup of Gathright,Grudz,Gordan,Guillen, and Gload should be referred to as the G-Men

How about Fully Gloaded, Lock and Gload, and solid Gload. Let's make this happen!

Anyone care to weigh in on when TPJ might get benched cause of his poor bat? Callaspo has shown some promise at the plate and hasn't been too bad in the field from what I heard.

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
