Royals baseball: something for the ladies, too

Nice beefcake calendar here featuring your favorite undefeated Royals and by "nice," I mean, "hilarious."

One thing that constantly amuses me is this idea that certain people can do ridiculous things that you or me would get laughed at and it's cool, just because of who they are.

Anybody think Jared Allen had a hard time finding a date last fall when he grew a mullet and racing stripes on the side of his head?

Somehow, I don't think there'd be a Mrs Ball Star right now if I was rocking that 'do, or if there was, I'd need a lot of Miller Lite to be OK with the woman who was OK with the 'do.

You see where I'm going with this? Anyway, it's good to see these guys show their sense of humor a little, and I hope that's what they're doing.

Which one is the best picture? The easy answer is Billy Butler, with his pink polo and pose-by-numbers look, but I think I'm going with nad-protecting John Buck, aka Mr July, for the cool-but-casual, flannel-over-the-white-T look.

He looks like an extra on Grease no? Zach Morris would be proud.

He also gets bonus points for posing inside what looks like a giant Christmas wreath with DeJesus in the outtakes gallery.

I must say that DDJ's nod to the mid-90s with the flip collar also impressed as did TPJ's "I lost a bet and wore the tacky sweater I got for Christmas from grandma" look. It's hard to knock Butler. He's 21, so you know his wife (or Lora Grosshans) picked that shirt.

Mrs. Ball Star one of those calendars. Its about time she gets to look at some real men. Can't wait to see how Greinke throws today. Meche and Banny set the bar pretty high.

when the Royals are playing to sweep the "Greatest Offense Ever Assembled" Detroit Tigers?

You're probably the most angry man I know, Goody. And quit knocking Mellinger, compared to the rest of the Star's staff (aside from Ryan Young, of course) he's Adonis. Mrs. Ball Star did very considering she settled for a sportswriter.

...man, the outtake galleries of these were painful. One of those actually managed to make Grudzielanek look awkward and misshapen, which as all the ladies here (and many of the men) know...he isn't. It's amazing how completely uncomfortable a lot of the boys looked, even the pretty (!) ones like DDJ.

Joey Gathright ought to be a model sometime. And I think I'm going to actually buy one of these now.

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
