Royal Links, Tuesday edition: Royals getting love, A-Rod slumming it for $300 million, and maybe the best video ever?

(UPDATE: Reader Todd Barton rightfully points out we should link to Sweeney officially making the A's.)

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- Talked to a scout the other day who works for an NL Central team and thinks the Royals would be good enough to compete in that division this year.

Now, he also said that most people would think he was crazy, and also that by "compete" he means finish second or third, 85 wins or so, and that this would be the top of their ceiling.

But still, it's something.

Abbreviated links, haven't seen too much stuff new in the last day or so worthy of your eyes, but as always, please pass along anything you've got (smellinger@kcstar.com):

* Tell me if you read this the same way, but is this story saying that A-Rod has had a major priorities shift because he took $300 million to stay with the Yankees?

Who else was going to give him that kind of money?

* Clark Fosler at Royals Authority looks at the Indians.

* Poor Emil.

* Big League Stew author and Ball Star friend Kevin Kaduk sends this link, which is the best thing I will see today.

* Weird.

* Rany does his thing at Baseball Prospectus (subscription required), looking at the relationship between runs and unearned runs and fits Zack Greinke in here, too. Good stuff.

Everyone made a fuss when he left because he led the team in RBI...When the leader of your teams RBI is hitting in a little over 80 a year, it's time to consider finding someone new...

He walked in the bottom of the inning (8th or 9th) on 5 pitches. One check swing, a jog to first, replaced by a pinch runner. I don't know the status of the injury. (just kidding). They stated that he has only played in 132 games over the past two years.

Anyway, I'm glad he has found a place to play, too bad he couldn't stay healthy here.

Two weeks from today, dugout box,aaaahhhhh, I can taste the saurkraut (sp) already.

I was shocked to hear that he didn't pull a hammie jogging to first.

Ahhh, it's great to read about an Emil Brown base-running blunder and know that it didn't happen in a Royals uniform.

Don't bash Emil too quick. He hit a bomb today.

Good riddance, Emil!

Gil Meche: The older brother of the Royals' rotation talks bowling, collecting baseball cards, and sliders

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
