Royals to bring out powder blue hats in 2010

Score one for Royals marketing. The team announced Thursday that next year's team will wear a new powder blue hat with their powder blue jerseys, which have been worn every home day game since the 2008 season.

The hat -- shown above here -- will go on sale for $38 at the team store at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday. The store will also be open before the Kansas-Missouri football game -- remember when that game mattered? -- and a week from tomorrow, Willie Wilson, Kevin Seitzer and Willie Aikens will be signing autographs at the store from noon to 2 p.m.

You can pre-order the hats at royals.com, but they won't ship until Dec. 1.

The team store also has a selection of Zack Greinke Cy Young merchandise available.

The $38 price for a baseball cap is outrageous! Why pay almost double the cost of a retail purchase?

You know what's throwback; not having our team be a glorified farm team for Boston and New York.

You know what's throwback; not losing 100+ games each and every year

You know what's throwback; having it be May and not already be in the cellar with no hope of contending for anything.

You know what's throwback; Having an all-star slugger on our team who's under the age of 30.

You know what's throwback; having a team that's not synonymous with losing. "If you're a team like the Royals, why do you even drive to the ballpark?"

You know what's throwback; having an owner who knows that KC is one of the best baseball towns in the league, and he knows that if he put a winning team on the field, The K would smash attendance and merchandising records like they did in the 80's.

You know what's throwback; having a team that at least pretends they're trying to win. One that in December and January is actually trying to make the team better, instead of waiting until February to see what castoffs are desperate enough to wear Royal blue.

You know what's throwback; Me loving this team enough to bake in the hot sun for 81 games a season, like I did when I was their bat boy in the 80's.

I wish this team would move already, so KC fans would at least have an excuse not to watch baseball in the summer - because "Throwback Jerseys" are just a cynical, greedy, soulless way to generate undeserved revenue. The thought that someone in the upper office of the Royals isn't going to insult our intelligence is indeed a throwback.

Throwback is having an owner that is competitive and proud of the team that represents his hometown. Throwback is putting winning ahead of 'not losing money.' Throwback is paying top dollar for the best baseball minds to scout and develop talent. Throwback is going after and signing the best free agents players and managers to create a winning atmosphere year after year.

Throwback is having an owner that lived in the area gave back to the city both financially and socially.

Throwback is about a tradition of excellence.

As long as Glass owns this team, the only tradition this franchise will have is one of embarrassment, ineptitude, in a word...Wal-Mart.

Seeing a number of Red Sox vs Blue Jays games on the east coast, I've noticed that the Blue Jays have also gone to their throwback uni's at home. However, they did it right by actually wearing the entire powder blue uniform that they wore on the road back in the mid 80's. They didn't half-a__ do it by creating some amalgam of old and new like the Royals did with the their 'throwbacks.'

I really don't count the Royals' 'powder blue' uni's as throwbacks. If they want a splash of REAL nostalgia, they should, every once in a while, wear the old road uniforms with "KANSAS CITY" across the front of the jersey and the matching blue pants.

The powder blue hat gimmick is simply another attempt (like free hotdogs & t-shirts) to divert the fans from the fact that the product on the field is sub-standard. Typical Wal-mart merchandising.

"Come see the NEW and IMPROVED Kansas City Royals featuring Powder Blue packaging with 10% less errors on the season!!"

As usual, everything this club does is bass-ackward and dumb.

Does anyone else think these hats are just ugly? Powder blue unis are fine but these two different shades of blue on a hat just don't look right. Especially not for $38.

They play like clowns, so why not dress like clowns.

Submitted by bobchisam on November 20, 2009 - 10:55am.

If a team wishes to establish a tradition, they usually do it by keeping their uniforms and hats the same. Since this team has nothing going for it, I guess they have to go in another direction.

$38? No relation to reality.

Not getting the Grienke hat connection. I like the hat. Royal Blue hat is a classic, but there are enough games in the year where you can have more then one hat.
Cardianls have a classic hat also and they have multiple versions.

Grey hat was dumped(still my favorite)because of complaints that it showed sweat stains. Will probably have the same problem with powder blue.

Now they just need to lose those white pants. Since when do powder blue jerseys look good with white pants?

Submitted by DCRoyalsfan on November 19, 2009 - 4:12pm.

What is this fascination with all things powder blue? The name of the team is the Royals. All of their gear should be Royal blue. Bring out the powder blue unis as a throwback occasionally if you must, but leave the cap alone. I ain't buying one of those things.

Submitted by jtuck123 on November 19, 2009 - 12:58pm.

Well...if we get rid of the white pants, that definitely is the last straw in the organization wanting Zack here...if we get rid of those, he's gone for sure*...

* I love sarcasm...the Greek roots mean something like "tearing flesh"...sounds really cool...

Why don't they just bring back the poweder blue uniforms they had in the 70s and 80s? Quit this crap with switching hats and stuff.

Submitted by Otis26 on November 19, 2009 - 11:30am.

Meh...don't care about the hat and certainly won't drop $38 on one unless it was worn by Jeter.

The most significant thing about this little blurb is that Willie Aikens is being brought back into the family. I saw him Opening Day and that was cool. Now he's being brought into other things.

The man paid his debt and what he did doesn't take away from the fact that he was a good ballplayer and a member of the family.

Well done Royals...probably your best move this off-season.

Submitted by Flip on November 19, 2009 - 11:54am.

To me, that hat sends signals that the Royals have no intention to keep Greinke. It ranks up there with the gray ones and the black ones. They fail. Why ruin a classic? Why TRY to look stupid?

Submitted by jtuck123 on November 19, 2009 - 12:26pm.

Riiiight...Somehow we can derive that the Royals don't want Zack Greinke because we came out with powder blue hats...It's all coming to me now...

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
