Join the First Annual Very Official Ball Star Over-Under Challenge

(UPDATE: the Royals categories are all separate, meaning you should pick over or under for division finish, then over or under for runs scored, then over or under for runs against, etc., so that there are five team categories plus the 10 for individual guys. From the first dozen or so of these entries, it looks like I wasn't very clear on this originally. My bad. Keep 'em coming.)

This is for entertainment purposes only, of course, but Ball Star is hosting the simply named First Annual Very Official Over-Under Challenge, and let's just say the stakes are high.

Winner gets a guest post and round of wings from the Peanut. If the winner turns out to be a communist who does not appreciate the deliciousness of The Peanut's wings, other forms of payment may be negotiated.

Here are the ground rules:

* Entries must be sent to kcballstar@gmail.com, received by the first pitch of Opening Day.

* Picks should be done in the order presented here, and please put OVER-UNDER on the subject line.

* One ballot per person, please, and while I'm saying please...be patient come the end of the season and realize that I've totally set myself up for punishment here, tabulating all these entries just as the playoffs start.

* I don't have a book to sell here, so I would instead encourage you to visit this site as often as possible, inflating the hits count above rival kansascity.com blogs like Mom2Mom, Prime Buzz, and the grand daddy of them all: Crime Scene KC.

OK, with that all settled, here are the 15 categories with two tie breakers:

Jose Guillen: 99 1/2 RBIs

David DeJesus: .375 on-base percentage

Gil Meche: 3.85 ERA

Trey Hillman: 2 1/2 ejections

Alex Gordon: 22 HR

Brian Bannister: 190 innings

Zack Greinke: 11 1/2 wins

Luke Hochevar: 18 starts

Alberto Callaspo: 26 strikeouts

Billy Buter: 81 starts at 1B

Royals: 4th place (an under pick means they'll finish third or better), 76 1/2 wins, 750 runs scored, 790 runs against, 20 games out of first place

Tie breaker: pick the winner of the final hot dog standings.

Second tie breaker: pick the season's total attendance figure, and this isn't "The Price Is Right," so feel free to go over.

But I am a kosher-observant Jew, so when I win, you'll just have to get me my wings at Dougies' BBQ here in NYC.

Not only do I have the stress of a NCAA bracket but now this!!

I like the Callaspo line. I'm picking over since I think he'll get more than 200-250 AB.

Cool idea, Sam.

Gil Meche: The older brother of the Royals' rotation talks bowling, collecting baseball cards, and sliders

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
