Willie Bloomquist's playing time is both a necessity and a sign that the Royals are in a bad place

Willie Bloomquist's playing time is both a necessity and a sign that the Royals are in a bad place

Hard to believe the National League is /{this/} bad, where the anemic Cincinnati Reds are a .500 team, but apparently it's true.

That team we just saw for three games looked an awful lot like the Royals of the last five weeks: bad defense, hacktastic hitting, and talented pitchers unable to carry the team.

It's really easy to imagine the Royals as an 85-or-so win team in the National League, a subject that always comes up this time of year because the Royals had the chance to switch leagues 12 or so years ago.

Some people regret they didn't take that trip to Europe in college, before they got weighed down by responsibility. The Royals should regret they didn't take that trip to the NL, before they got weighed down by the superior league and a tilted financial structure.

One quick thought, and I'll be back this afternoon with more*: Willie Bloomquist has started 10 consecutive games, starting at six different positions and playing seven.

* What's the over-under on how long these two-a-day posts continue?

Bloomquist came to Kansas City to give Alberto Callaspo some competition at second base, and, after that, to give the Royals some versatility off the bench.

He's a pro's pro, can play virtually anywhere in the field, and gives tough at bats and smart base running. We've referenced this stat before, but the Royals are 21-15 when he starts and 7-19 when he doesn't. That can't be a total coincidence.

Now, all that being said, Bloomquist getting so much playing time -- he's on pace for about 400 plate appearances, which would be more than 100 above his career high -- is an indication of just how haywire this season has gone for the Royals.

Willie Bloomquist can start somewhat regularly for a bad team. He comes off the bench and spot-starts for a good one.

We thought before the season that the Royals had the chance to be a good team.

Injuries to -- deep breath -- Alex Gordon, Jose Guillen, Joakim Soria, Coco Crisp, John Buck and John Bale, among others, have made this more of a bad team.

The roster now includes the redundant redundancy of Tony Pena Jr., Luis Hernandez, Tug Hulett, and Bloomquist. That's nearly one-third of the position players on the roster right now.

This past weekend helped. Getting three good starts by Luke Hochevar, Kyle Davies (sort of) and Brian Bannister is a huge boost.

That's the sort of team we envisioned before the season, the sort of team that could be a default winner of the winnable AL Central if the other teams lag.

Don't look now, but the Royals are only 5 1/2 games back.

Back this afternoon with some thoughts on the pitchers.

If KC is +6 Willie in the lineup, it's a no-brainer that he should start everyday...he's earned it. It's too bad pros like Willie toil in relative obscurity as back ups, finally get to play everyday, then get platooned in disguise because they have never been everyday players.

That -12 when he doesn't start really stands out...let's beat AZ...with Willie on the field!

I hated the Willie Bloomquist signing this offseason. H-A-T-E-D it. And I was fully prepared to hate him all season.

And I was wrong. He has been a more than serviceable player for the Royals. He plays hard and doesn't make mistakes. He may not have great range at SS, but he is a MUCH better option than TPJ/Luis/Tug because he can actually get a hit once in awhile.

Playing Bloomquist more is not an issue. Having three defensive specialists (TPJ/Luis/Tug) that are vastly overrated on defense is an issue. A big one. Mostly because there is no one else that should be on the roster, outside of Kila who is blocked by Butler and Jacobs.

Wow, another mood swing. From "go team!" to "we should have gone to the National League" in the course of one weekend series. Maybe this afternoon, in asterisk form, we'll get "I like football better."

Maybe if you read this blog for more than a few recent posts you would know that Sam's notion of the Royals being better off in the NL is not a recent "mood swing".

I'd agree with your point about The Spork if he was playing like Willie Bloomquist...but he's hitting .291/.353/.396. His .749 OPS is 6th best on the team. He's attributed his improved hitting to getting regular at-bats. If before the season you told me he'd be a regular, I would have written off the Royals chances. But now I say he's earned a regular spot...at least until his bat goes cold.

So I was looking at O-Royals stats to see if there was any viable call-up candidate besides Tug Hulett in Omaha. The obvious fan choice would be Kila, whose OPS of 940 is the highest on Omaha's roster. I was looking for "the usual suspects" who have been with the Royals for a long time (Costa, Shealy, and Lubanski) and noticed that Costa only appeared in one game for Omaha, and that Shealy and Lubanski have only appeared in 25 and 24 respectively. (Kila has appeared in 60 games, the team has played 63 games). Considering that all three were both within the last few players cut (Lubanski in particular I remember having a monster spring, and Costa was like the 27th or 26th man coming into the season) are all 3 injured? If so, how severely? For a club that still lacks organizational depth at the AA and AAA levels, it would seem to me that losing what precious few "prospects" (I use the term losely, as Shealy and Costa are essentially known quantities) would be bigger news.

so I just looked, and Lubanski and Shealy have been on the DL since mid-May, and Costa since after the 1st game of the season... BUMMER!

Not only is there nobody at AAA, the only position player at AA that looks slightly promising is outfielder Jordan Parraz, and since he's so new to the organization I don't know much about him. After that you have to get down to A and A+. That's just a long long ways away still.

This is why I really wanted the Royals to draft SS Grant Green and not Aaron Crow. We really need some position player talent coming up and Green is close to big league ready. A shortstop would really have been nice.

If we are a 94 win team with Bloomie in the starting line-up (and the sample size WITH him is much bigger than that without him), then why is playing him more so bad? Clearly he is outperforming all of the other roll playing middle infielders, and with Crisp on the DL and Maier struggling, Willie is back to being primarily an outfielder while the other 3 vie for time in the infield, so the Tug Hulett call-up isn't THAT crazy, since he'll mostly just get mop-up duty and pinch running, etc like last time he called up.

I fail to see the logic in starting him at so many different positions. TPJ and Hernandez really aren't a defensive and certainly not an offensive upgrade to Bloomquist at shortstop. Due to the injuries, he has a lot of value to this club. But, with Teahen at third and Callaspo now entrenched at second, he should be the starting shortstop. Maier is a far superior defensive outfielder, so leave him in the outfield. Hernandez and TPJ should not ever set foot on the field. When they play, that makes the Royals a bad team. Using Bloomquist at shortstop because of injuries doesn't mean the Royals are in a bad place. Using him all over the field and putting TPJ or Hernandez in at short, puts them in a bad place.

I agree with this sentiment. His versatility is cool in that we can bring in one of the glove-only middle infielders for a defensive replacement and put Willie in right field for Guillen and improve our defense at two spots. But for now, he should be the everyday shortstop.

Submitted by cpass on June 15, 2009 - 11:53am.

If Willie is going to play everyday for now, let's put him at short. I haven't seen any defensive downgrade. It sure makes for a better lineup than anything that includes Hernandez or TPJ.

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
