Kyle Davies works for a living and plays catch with kids

Somewhat interesting debate going on over at scout.com’s Royals board about Kyle Davies spending part of his offseason working for his father's construction company.

I always thought this was what people wanted more of, their professional athletes getting fewer manicures and using up more sweat towels. You can’t please all the people all the time, someone smart said that once, so maybe this is just one more example. Anyway, I wanted to tell you a quick story.

A few days after we ran the story about Davies, an e-mail popped in from a proud father. He told this story of a baseball skills clinic put on this past summer with some Royals players serving as instructors.

Apparently they picked a bad day for baseball instruction because the rain wouldn’t stop, all morning, so there wasn’t much to do but ask questions and get an autograph or two. Around the time everyone was packing up to leave, a boy walked up to Kyle and asked if he’d throw him a ball just one time so he could tell his friends he played catch with a big leaguer. Kyle smiled.

“You want to play catch? Let’s go.”

So Kyle grabbed a glove and played catch with this kid for about 20 minutes, while everyone else was leaving.

Now, personally, I find it hard to fault a big leaguer who plays catch with kids between starts and digs ditches in the offseason, but I can’t talk you into anything.

OK, I’ll be back later this week. Sorry for the absence.

I was at a game this summer and we decided to hang out at the player's parking lot after the game. I'm not much of an autograph seeker but I like to trade banter with the guys as they're leaving or signing for others.

This particular evening there was a teacher from Kyle's high school who had brought several upper classmen to Kansas City for some type of youth council or whatever. She wanted the kids to meet a successful alum. She had his phone number and he had even sent her text messages saying he would be right out.

We waited and waited and finally he drove out...took a right, and left the parking lot. The teacher stood there dejectedly and turned and told the group of school kids that they missed their chance to meet him. They slowly wandered off towards the bus.

Whether they hooked up later I don't know, but I have to tell you at that moment the look on the faces of everyone involved wasn't amusing.

so we're still on the lookout for an on the cheap but major league middle infielder to team with Aviles.
why is nobody talking about... Jerry Hairston Jr.?
Plus - He's 32 (which is younger than a LOT of the FA SS's in the league).
Plus - He hit .326/.384/.487 last season.
Plus - He played for the Reds (so he's not a "winning team only" diva)
Plus - He is versatile (can play 2B, SS, LF, even 3B or CF if we get decimated by Injuries, which would allow a guy like Callaspo to continue to get semi-regular time and continue to develop)
Plus - He could be had for around a million dollars if recent contract amounts are any indication.
Minus - He only played half a season last year and went on the 15 Day list at least twice, but I'm not sure of the nature of the injuries. (I also consider this moot since we were willing to give 10 mil a year to Furcal who put up similar numbers but played in MUCH fewer games due to serious back issues and is much older).

What happens when Jose Guillen comes in this year and he's not out of shape? What happens if Tony Pena Jr. pinch hits a home run and starts taking over duties at shortstop? What happens when the Royals start winning and maybe, just maybe, Kyle Farnsworth wants to be here?

I think sometimes we get a little to accustomed to life as a terrible baseball organization. I'm not saying championships will be won this year. I'm not even saying we'll finish 3rd this year. But let's have a little holiday cheer and be somewhat positive...

...some of the folks on scout.com are really bent out of shape about this. The guy's not getting paid millions (he made $427,000 last year) and Dayton Moore isn't going to tear up his contract (because he doesn't even have one). There was a day and age when all major leaguers worked year round because they needed the income; and I see no problem with what Davies is doing. There are worse things in the world. He could get hurt / out of shape in any one of a gazillion ways besides this - including falling off the sofa while he lazes the winter away eating bonbons, watching soap operas, and getting fat (I'm looking at YOU, Jose Guillen). And he's not going to nightclubs with guns and shooting himself a la Plaxico Burress. He said he's felt lazy the last couple of offseasons because he didn't work; at least he's keeping active.

I'm way more interested in seeing if Kyle Davies can continue to channel Buddy Biancalana than I am in how he has opted to spend his offseason. He seems like a good guy to me, and I can't fault him either.

(By the way Sam, don't be such a stranger!)

Before reading that article, I was very ambivalent about Davies. Now he's one of my favorites, and I'll be pulling for him. I just hope he buys the beer at the end of the day! Bet your *** he would if he worked on my crew! "Come on, big leaguer, pony up!"

Sam! Glad to see you still remember your password to the blog. I've been hoping you might enlighten us with some hot stove talk while we're in hibernation.

This was a great article. And completely reminded me of why I get the newspaper delivered every day. If I want the scores, I'll go online. I pick up the paper for stuff like this. Great piece. I really have no issue whatsoever if Davies is working construction. Better than the alternative - which is sleeping with some washed-up pop star who has more mileage than my Dad's '82 Dodge.

Do we need to start the damage control now for the possibility of seeing Jr. Pena in a Royals uniform this spring or is there a possibility he might be gone? Is there any scenario still available? Is it a forgone conclusion the Royals will carry THAT MANY first basemen into spring training with the hopes of making some changes at that point? What is the over-under date at which Kyle Farnsworth starts crying that he misses New York? (And is it true they signed him to take some of the heat of Jose Guillen by the fans?)

Great piece on Arbuckle as well. Keep up the good work. Have a safe and enjoyable Holidays.

Pena will be in a Royals uniform, we will have 5 first baseman on our 40 man roster, Farnsworth will blow one lead and wish that the Bombers would come and take him back to Neverland, and Jose will be an angel...Anything else?

Pull one obscure muscle and you're out for six weeks. You keep players from doing manual labor, you logically should keep players from doing other things that have injured players in the past, including: wearing cowboy boots; getting a tattoo; carrying luggage; carrying deer meat; playing video games; dreaming; buttering bread; vomiting; and shaking hands.

Heck, if this becomes a trend, players will no longer be allowed to iron their shirts while wearing them. And that would be a shame.

A baseball player with a work ethic, imagine that. Sounds like Kyle's got solid character all around. If the complaint is that he might injure himself while hauling around loads of shingles or pouring cement, it's myopic. He's staying in shape the honest way and anyway, the diva players are at a risk too, by living the red carpet life night-after-night. Go, Kyle, go. Just don't mash your friggin hand and make us look like fools over here. Safety first and all that...

...but I forgive you. I enjoyed the story and had a knee-JERK reaction similar to those guys on the other site "What is he thinking?!?!?!? He might get hurt" and then I realized he's a big boy and can think for himself.

I know Appier used to get on a bulldozer all the time (They called him Bulldozer Bob since his real first name was Robert) and other guys have had similar jobs during the offseason.

Some guys get hurt walking around in their house so I don't see a problem.

Very good first-day turnout on Twitter. Thank you. If you're on and haven't found me, I'm at "mellinger." Let's join up, we'll have fun.

You may have noticed we didn't have an MGD update after the weekend, and that's because of a bonus weekend post on SI coverboy/comedian Zack Greinke, and that Davies' start on Thursday means we won't miss a week with an MGD update.

Zack Greinke: Ball Star's most requested interview subject talks trucks, fighting, and trash

Zack Greinke, for a lot of reasons, might be the most interesting player on the Royals roster, and this is a team that includes an outfielder who owns lions and ostriches and likes to be slapped in the face, a pitcher who was knighted by his native Aruba, another who works construction in the offseason, and a reliever who body slams opposing players and prides himself on his baking.

Greinke is the most-requested interview for this blog, and if you act now, you can read a bonus interview where Kyle Davies defends himself against what he alleges is Greinke's slander. All in good fun.

Army Maj. Michael Lalor: Rooting on the Royals from Iraq

Confession time. That "contest" we ran here
was officially won by Tom Barkwell from Madagascar, and I loved both his words and the fact that he sent them from an island nation in the Indian Ocean, but I gotta tell you, it wasn't my favorite letter.

Nope, my favorite came from Army Maj. Michael Lalor, whose words came from Iraq.

I didn't mention this in the original contest because I wanted to give Michael his own post. He was kind enough to answer some questions over e-mail, which we're turning into the latest interview. His letter is below our e-mail exchange.
